Small, lightweight, and sporting a long battery life, netbooks are becoming more and more favorite for their portability and versatility. If you need to surf the web or check e-mail on the go, a netbook might be right for you.

If going for Windows most netbooks have been running Xp but now have a version of Windows 7 on them. To be honest, these work fine. If you are a Windows user that needs to use Windows applications, whether selection will make sense. On older netbooks like the former models, both of these will not work to well. If you don't want to use Windows there are abundance of Linux flavors to pick from. Going into all the possible versions would be extensive. There are some pointers that you should be aware of when selecting a netbook Linux operating system. Try to find a distribution that sticks with Fluxbox or Xfce. These will use less resources than Gnome or Kde. It's not that these don't work, but you will have more processing power for applications. Also look for distributions that are specifically made for netbooks. Many have gone in and resized menus to make them perfectly fit on the smaller screens. Luckily on the Linux side, you can try as many of these as you want until you find something you nothing else but like.
Do yourself a favor and try out a few dissimilar platform to see if one works best for you than another.
